Dwight D. Eisenhower ("Ike") was a five-star general who served as the 34th President of the United States from 1953 to 1961. He was a pivotal figure in 20th-century history, renowned for his military leadership during World War II and his moderate approach to domestic policy during a period of American prosperity.
As the Supreme Allied Commander, Eisenhower oversaw the successful D-Day Invasion of Normandy, a decisive moment that led to the defeat of Nazi Germany. Following his military career, he transitioned into the presidency and worked to ease the tensions of the Cold War, successfully obtaining a truce in the Korean War.
Domestically, his administration is most famous for authorizing the Interstate Highway System in 1956, the largest public works project in American history.
