Old Abe, portrait sculpture

Old Abe is a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 - April 15, 1865) 16th President of the United States sculpted at an older age, by artist Zenos Frudakis. Lincoln served as President from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865, providing leadership during the Civil War. During this time he issued the Emancipation Proclamation and abolished slavery. Lincoln preserved the Union, strengthened the federal government and modernized the economy.

America 250 — Lincoln’s Influence on Freedom, Unity, and Democracy
Abraham Lincoln’s leadership fundamentally reshaped the meaning of the American experiment. As the 16th President of the United States, he steered the country through the Civil War with a steadfast commitment to national unity and human liberty. His Emancipation Proclamation and his support for the 13th Amendment made the end of slavery a central aim of the war, transforming the nation’s moral and political direction.

On November 19, 1863, Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address—just 272 words that redefined the conflict as a test of equality, self-government, and the unfinished work of democracy. His words continue to resonate as a blueprint for the nation’s aspirations.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, Lincoln’s legacy stands as a reminder that freedom expands when individuals and institutions confront injustice with courage, clarity, and compassion. His vision for a “new birth of freedom” remains one of the most enduring contributions to the nation’s ongoing story.
