Coach "Lake" Staffieri
Coach "Lake" Staffieri (Sept. 20, 1924 - April 9, 2010) bas relief sculpture by Zenos Frudakis. Longtime University of Pennsylvania football assistant coach, cheeleader and all around supporter, Staffieri was at University of Pennsylvania for 34 seasons. A native Philadelphian, Staffieri joined University of Pennsylvania's staff in 1977 as head freshman coach and an assistant to Harry Gamble's staff. He played college football at Maryland and was a member of the Terps' 1953 national championship team, playing in four bowl games; Orange Bowls (two), Gator and Sugar (in 1953). in 1962, he earned his Master's degree from Villanova University. Affectionally known as "Coach Lake" he earned his nickname because, when he told people his name, he would say, "Dan Staffieri...it rhymes with Lake Erie."
