Thomas Paine, Relief Sculpture
Thomas Paine (January 29, 1737 — June 8, 1809)
American Founding Father, Revolutionary Thinker, Architect of American Independence
Relief sculpture of Thomas Paine—American Founding Father and one of the clearest voices urging independence—created by sculptor Zenos Frudakis. Shown here in clay as a work in progress, the completed work will be cast in bronze.
Paine, an English-born political thinker and revolutionary writer, became one of the most influential communicators of the 18th century. His pamphlet Common Sense (1776) ignited widespread support for full separation from Great Britain, transforming colonial frustration into a united call for liberty. His later series, The American Crisis (1776–1783), helped sustain the resolve of both Continental soldiers and the public, offering words of courage during the most desperate phases of the Revolutionary War.
Paine’s powerful, accessible prose helped shape the nation’s emerging identity, turning Enlightenment principles into a shared public cause and leaving a legacy that continues to influence American ideals of freedom and self-government.
